How long does CBD take to work? Onset, duration and what changes them
Fifteen minutes or two hours: both are normal, depending on how you take it. Onset and duration by format, the food effect almost nobody mentions, and how to tell real results from impatience.

Somebody takes their first dropper of CBD, waits twenty minutes, feels nothing dramatic, and concludes it doesn't work. Somebody else takes a gummy before a movie and wonders why the calm arrived during the credits. Both experiences are the same lesson: with CBD, *how* you take it decides *when* it works, and impatience is the most common reason people give up on something that was actually working.
This guide lays out realistic onset and duration numbers by format, explains the absorption math behind them, covers the factors that speed things up or slow them down (one of them is breakfast), and shows how to tell a real effect from a placebo or a dud.
The short answer, by format
| Format | Onset | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tincture, under the tongue | 15-45 min | 4-6 hours | Hold 30-60 seconds before swallowing |
| Tincture, swallowed directly | 45-90 min | 5-7 hours | Behaves like an edible |
| Gummies and capsules | 45 min-2 hours | 6-8 hours | Slowest start, longest tail |
| Topicals (creams, balms) | 15-45 min | 2-4 hours | Localized, doesn't reach the bloodstream meaningfully |
These are ranges, not promises. Two people taking the same product can sit at opposite ends of them, for reasons covered below. But if your experience falls far outside these windows, the first suspects are technique, timing with food, or a serving that's too small.
Why the route changes everything
The delay isn't the CBD deciding whether to work. It's logistics: how the molecule gets from the product into your bloodstream. Swallowed CBD takes the slow road, through the stomach and then the liver, where a large share of it is metabolized before it ever circulates. This first-pass effect is brutal: oral bioavailability of CBD is commonly estimated at only around 6-19%. Of a swallowed 50 mg serving, your bloodstream may see less than 10 mg.
Held under the tongue, part of the oil absorbs through the sublingual tissue directly into the blood, skipping the liver's first pass. That's why the same tincture works faster and more efficiently sublingually than swallowed, and why those 30-60 seconds of holding are not a ritual flourish. They're the entire point of the format.

The food effect almost nobody mentions
CBD is fat-soluble, and it hitches a ride on dietary fat. Pharmaceutical research on a prescription CBD formulation found that taking it with a high-fat meal increased absorption several-fold compared to an empty stomach, with exposure rising roughly four to five times in some measures. The practical version: a serving taken alongside breakfast with eggs, avocado or full-fat yogurt delivers meaningfully more than the identical serving taken fasting. If you've been taking CBD on an empty stomach and shrugging at the results, this single change is worth testing before any increase in serving size.
What else speeds it up or slows it down
- **Body composition.** CBD stores in fat tissue, so body weight and fat percentage influence both how much you need and how long it lingers.
- **Metabolism.** The liver enzymes that process CBD run at different speeds in different people, and some medications compete for them. If you take prescription drugs, clear it with your doctor.
- **Serving size.** Too little simply doesn't register. Our [dosage guide](/blog/cbd-dosage) covers finding the minimum effective amount methodically.
- **Product quality.** A mislabeled product changes the math entirely, which is why [reading the batch COA](/blog/how-to-read-a-coa) beats trusting the label.
- **What you're measuring.** Settling an anxious evening is noticeable within the hour; steadier sleep and a calmer baseline are trends that need days of data.
Acute vs cumulative: the two clocks
CBD runs on two clocks. The first is the acute one this article has covered so far: serving to onset to wear-off, measured in minutes and hours. The second is cumulative. With consistent daily use, many people report the more valuable changes, a steadier mood baseline and calmer response to everyday stress, emerging across one to two weeks. This is why our two-week trial protocol insists on daily notes: the second clock is invisible without them, and it's the one most worth reading.
How long does CBD stay in your system?
Feeling the effect and carrying the molecule are different timelines. The felt effect of a tincture fades within 4-6 hours, but CBD's elimination half-life stretches from roughly a day after a single use to 2-5 days with regular use, as fat tissue slowly releases what it stored. CBD itself is not what drug screenings look for, but if testing is part of your life, the trace THC question matters more than the CBD one, and our drug-testing guide covers it without hand-waving.
Questions, answered
The usual suspects, in order: the serving is too small, it's being swallowed instead of held under the tongue, it's taken on an empty stomach, the trial has lasted three days instead of two weeks, or the product's actual content doesn't match its label. Work through them in that order.
Marginally faster, substantially weaker. Fat dramatically improves how much CBD gets absorbed, so the small head start of an empty stomach costs you most of the payload. With food wins.
Many people split their daily amount, morning and evening, precisely because a tincture's effects span 4-6 hours. Keep the total consistent and adjust the split to where your day actually needs it.
CBD doesn't show the classic escalating tolerance pattern of THC. Most people settle on a stable serving for the long run. If your stable serving slowly stops working, revisit quality and routine before assuming tolerance.
Not faster, but more per drop. Concentration changes how much CBD each milliliter carries, not the absorption route. A high-potency bottle mainly means fewer drops and better cost per milligram.
Potency that makes the math easy
planntz tinctures carry up to 15,000 mg per bottle, lab-verified on a published COA, so each drop counts and each serving is easy to measure.
